Here Are All The Excellent Free PS Plus Games For October 2022

October’s free PlayStation Plus Essential games are surprising for three reasons:

  • First, all three games are excellent offerings. Players will not be disappointed, especially since there’s some great variety between titles.
  • Second, one of these titles is already free on PlayStation Plus Extra, which is a first but which we’ll undoubtedly see lots more of. It was bound to happen sooner or later.
  • Third, while this is a super great lineup of games, it’s very similar to September’s lineup. One racing game, one fighting game and one quirky indie game. Huh.

In September, Sony released Need For Speed Heat (a racing game), Granblue Fantasy: Versus (a fighting game) and Tom (a quirky photography game).

This month we’re also getting a racing game, a fighting game and a quirky indie game, though the last isn’t about photography it’s about bullet time. Here are the three free PS Plus Essential titles releasing next Tuesday, October 4th, on PS4 and PS5.

Hot Wheels Unleashed (PS4 | PS5)

Nominated for best racing game in 2021, Hot Wheels Unleashed has a 75% Metacritic rating and a Very Positive user rating on Steam. If you’ve ever wanted to race your Hot Wheels cars around in a video game, with tracks set in fun locations like your bedroom, this is the game for you. You can even design your own tracks, which is enormous fun.

Injustice 2 (PS4)

One of my all-time favorite fighting games, Injustice 2 pits various DC Comics superheroes and supervillains against one another. Not only is this very fun in multiplayer, the game has a surprisingly good story mode that’s a must-play for any fans of the evil Superman storyline.

Superhot (PS4)

Crap. As soon as I saw this was one of the free games I heard GREAT. HOT. in my mind. Now I keep thinking it to myself against my will. Once you play, you’ll know what I mean. This is a pretty short game but it’s super innovative and fun. You basically have to puzzle your way through increasingly difficult scenarios using “bullet time.” When you move, so do enemies and bullets and so forth. Figure out how to dodge enemy bullets and turn their own momentum against them. It’s tricky and very fun (and also very fun in VR!)

All told, three incredible games for PS Plus’s basic ‘Essential’ tier subscribers this month. I recommend you download and play all three, even if you’re not a huge fan of these genres. Injustice 2 is a fighting game that has a lot of appeal outside fighting game enthusiast circles, so even filthy casuals (like me) can play. (I have played tons of fighting games and still consider myself a filthy casual compared to actual hardcore fighting game players—it’s serious business).

What do you think of this coming month’s lineup? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook.
